The BoyleSports.com Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Grade 3) is run early to mid December each year at Cheltenham Racecourse in Gloucestershire, England. The race is run over two miles five furlongs and there are seventeen fences to be jumped.
When the race was first run in 1963 it was known as the Massey Ferguson Gold Cup but over the years it has had several different sponsors and as a result a number of name changes.
The BoyleSports.com Gold Cup is run one month after the Paddy Power Gold Cup but has had less luck with the weather and has been abandoned because of frost and snow a number of times. The race has also been lost once through an outbreak of foot and mouth in 1967. In 2008 the race was abandoned because of the waterlogged state of the course.
The BoyleSports.com Gold Cup could be considered as a natural stepping stone for horses that have run in the Paddy Power Gold Cup being over a similar distance but so far only three horses have won the two races in the same National Hunt season. They were in 1988 Pegwell Bay trained by Captain Tim Forster, 1997 Senor El Betrutti trained by Mrs Susan Nock and in 2006 Exotic Dancer trained by Jonjo O′Neill. Interestingly enough none of these horses were ridden by the same jockey in the two races.
There have been several horses who have won the two races in different seasons including Fifty Dollars More winner of the 1982 Mackeson Gold Cup & 1983 Kennedy Construction Gold Cup, Beau Ranger 1984 Kennedy Construction Gold Cup & 1987 Mackeson Gold Cup, Another Coral 1991 Mackeson Gold Cup & 1992 Tripleprint Gold Cup, Dublin Flyer 1994 Tripleprint Gold Cup & 1995 Mackeson Gold Cup and Fondmort 2002 Tripleprint Gold Cup & 2003 Paddy Power Gold Cup.
The best weight carrying performance was by Pendil in 1973. He carried 12 stone 7lb to victory. Another fair weight carried by the winner of this race was when Flyingbolt carrying 12 stone 6lb won by 15 lengths in 1965.
